Westover, Overhills advance to boys' Cape Fear Valley 3-A final
Westover and Overhills had different ways of making it to the Cape Fear Valley 3-A tournament championship game. While the Wolverines trailed early and coasted late, the Jaguars almost let a large lead slip away.
Alfonzo Josey scored 20 points to lead a slow-starting Westover squad to a 67-42 win over Douglas Byrd in the semifinal round. The Wolverines will battle Overhills today at 7:30 after the Jaguars defeated Southern Lee 84-73 in their game.
After scoring 98 points in a blowout win over Union Pines in its regular season finale, Westover used strong defense to stifle Douglas Byrd, forcing 27 turnovers and holding the Eagles to 33 percent shooting.
The Wolverines shot only 39 percent themselves, but capitalized on fast-break opportunities after turnovers and success at the free-throw line. Westover went 19-for-25 from the charity stripe.
"Our gameplan was more toward defense tonight," Westover coach George Stackhouse said. "Douglas Byrd is a tough team to score upon, so I told the team to stay patient. In the second half, we were able to do that and get good shots."
Douglas Byrd started off well, taking a 15-10 lead after the first quarter and holding Westover to 23 percent shooting. The Eagles stretched their lead to seven before the Wolverines went on a 15-4 run to establish control and take a 30-26 lead into halftime.
Douglas Byrd got within two midway through the third quarter, but a 12-1 Westover run gave the Wolverines a double-digit lead they wouldn't relinquish over the game's final 10 minutes. The Wolverines built the lead up to 25 points, which wound up as the final margin.
"We had to stay disciplined and work hard throughout," Josey said. "We did that more in the second half."
In the other semifinal game, Overhills raced out to a 7-2 lead in the initial 90 seconds and dominated throughout the first half, taking a 42-25 halftime lead. The Jaguars pushed the lead as high as 20 early in the third quarter.
Southern Lee mounted a furious rally, cutting the lead to 55-51 headed into the fourth on a running one-handed 3-pointer by Christian Locust at the buzzer. A 3-point play by Juwan Jackson with 6:31 remaining allowed the Cavs to tie it at 57.
Overhills would turn to Jared Foster to prevent Southern Lee from taking the lead. Foster scored 14 of his game-high 26 points in the final six minutes, including five straight after Jackson's play to keep the Cavs at bay.
Southern Lee was led by Justin McKinnon, who scored 22 points.
