Mid-South boys' basketball: Seventy-First, South View advance to final

South View's Ria'n Holland knows his Tigers have a huge challenge awaiting them Thursday night when they take on Seventy-First.

The Tigers might have gotten the best of the Falcons in the teams' last meeting, but Holland said he expects an even fiercer contest.

"It's going to be tougher," the senior said. "They'll be better prepared this time."

Seventy-First and South View each won in the semifinal round of the Mid-South 4-A Conference tournament Tuesday night to set up what will be the fourth meeting between the two teams this season.

The top-seeded Falcons (23-2) beat No. 4 seed Terry Sanford 62-49 in the first semi of the night. South View (22-3), the second seed, followed suit, ousting No. 3 Pine Forest 68-52.

Both games were at Seventy-First, where the tournament will remain for Thursday's final. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Bulldogs contend

Terry Sanford (13-11) hung with Seventy-First through the first 10 minutes of Tuesday's game, and the score stood tied at 12 two minutes into the second quarter.

Three 3-pointers by guard Marcus Williams and a strong performance inside the paint by forward Dominic Page spread the gap until the Falcons led by seven at halftime, 33-26.

Page led the Falcons with 16 points. Williams and fellow guard Sidney Knox each scored 14.

Page credited his team's defense with generating offensive opportunities.

"Basically, we started off with a lot of intensity on defense," the senior said. "And we let that come through on our offense."

Tigers romp

Holland also pointed to his team's defensive effort as a key to the Tigers' victory.

The Tigers held the Trojans (15-11) to 22 points in the first half and outpaced Pine Forest to lead by 14 at the end of the third quarter.

Holland, bound for Wichita State next season, scored a game-high 28 points.

The win makes eight straight for the Tigers, who handed Seventy-First its only Mid-South loss last Friday. The Falcons won the first two meetings between the teams.
