Jack Britt puts up strong fight, falls short in state wrestling final
Jack Britt senior Aaron Dickson didn't hang his head when his Buccaneers fell 28-20 to Winston-Salem Parkland in the NCHSAA 4-A dual team championship Saturday.
"I feel pretty good," the 152-pounder said. "We had 'em sweating up to the end, and some things went their way."
It's an accomplishment for the Bucs even to cause a little perspiration on the collective brows of Parkland, a dynasty by any measure that claimed its seventh consecutive state title.
The Mustangs complete a perfect 48-0 season to bring their match win streak to 313.
The Buccaneers (33-8) came from behind twice to lead the Mustangs by as many as eight points before dropping the last four weight classes to lose the match.
The Mustangs claimed four of the first five matches, which started with the 145-pound weight class.
Then, the momentum swung Britt's way when senior Saetyre McDowell battled to a 10-7 win in the third overtime period against Deshawn McLean at 195 pounds.
McDowell's win kicked off a five-match streak for the Bucs that put Britt ahead 20-12 with four classes to go.
Following game plan
Buccaneers coach John DeWeese had commented in a pre-match interview that the Bucs would have to deny the Mustangs any "bonus points" - earned through pins.
The Bucs did that for the most part, with only one Britt wrestler - freshman Wesley Hollingsworth - being pinned.
Hollingsworth, who wrestled next-to-last for the Bucs, lasted until the second period against the top 132-pounder in the state, Jeremy Ward.
Ward pinned Hollingsworth at 2:39, giving Parkland a lead that would hold through the final contest of the match.
Parkland coach Maurice Atwood paid compliment to the Bucs following the match.
"This championship is special because it was the toughest," the coach said. "They were the toughest opponent we've faced in the finals."
