Marcianna Munn leads 71st girls to a perfect season

Seventy-First guard Marcianna Munn had a lot on her mind before the start of the Falcons' game against visiting South View on Friday night.

Not only did her team have the chance to finish out the regular season with a perfect record, but there was the little matter of it being Munn's last regular-season home game.

"It's Senior Night," Munn said. "The last home, conference game. I can be an emotional person sometimes."

The senior rode those emotions to a game-high 26 points, leading her team to a 56-49 win over the Tigers.

Coach Tracie Taylor has twice led Falcon squads to state championships - in 2003 and 2004 - but had never coached a team through a perfect regular season.

"This is a special group of young ladies," Taylor said. "I'm just so proud of them for playing hard every night. If we were down a little bit in certain games, they just found a way to get back on top."

Friday's game featured one such effort.

Munn's play included a 17-point first half that helped steer the Falcons (23-0, 12-0) back from a 13-8 deficit to start the game.

"I was on, so I just kept shooting," Munn said.

The Falcons went on a 13-0 run that stretched from the middle of the first quarter through the first minute of the second frame to claim a 21-13 lead.

Seventy-First never relinquished the lead, despite double-doubles from Jasmine Brown and Chinyere Bell. Brown scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Bell led the Tigers with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

The Tigers (18-5, 9-3) finished the regular season in a tie for second place in the Mid-South with Jack Britt.
