Seventy-First boys rally past Pine Forest, 53-44
Seventy-First already had started its comeback from 12 points down to Pine Forest when senior Kori Anderson got hot.
"I just thought we needed a spark," the forward said.
That spark and a 10-point third-quarter performance from Anderson helped the Falcons come from behind for a 53-44 victory against the visiting Trojans.
With the win, the Falcons took sole possession of first place in the Mid-South 4-A Conference with a 3-0 record in the league and an overall mark of 13-1.
The Trojans (10-6, 3-1 Mid-South) slipped into second place in the conference.
Anderson and teammate Sidney Knox each scored a game-high 15 points.
The Trojans jumped out to an early advantage on the strength of their relentless defense. Pine Forest led by as much as 22-10 midway through the second quarter.
Travis McEachern led the Trojans with 10 points and five assists.
The Falcons' comeback began in the second quarter with a pair of 3-pointers by Knox and an upswing in the intensity of the Seventy-First press.
The Falcons cut the Trojans' lead to 24-22 at halftime. After a few exchanged baskets, the Falcons embarked on an 11-0 run in the third quarter that gave them a 39-30 lead.
Seventy-First tied the game at 30-all on a fast break layup by Anderson, who was fouled on the shot but missed the free throw. A Falcon rebound was kicked out to Marcus Williams, who made a 3-point goal to give the Falcons their first lead of the game with just under three minutes left in the third quarter.
The Trojans never fully recovered, drawing to within four points in the final two minutes but no closer.
"I thought that, with the exception of about five and a half minutes of play, we controlled the pace of the game," Trojans' coach David May said. "I'm proud of our effort, but I felt we had position to win this game if we took away some of the self-inflicted wounds."
