Unruly fans asked to leave gym at North Brunswick

LELAND - Whiteville and North Brunswick finished their varsity boys' basketball game at North Brunswick in a near-empty gym Friday night after a near-melee forced deputies to ask fans of both schools to leave. North Brunswick took the win, 67-58.

According to statements posted on Twitter by a reporter from StarNewsOnline, play was stopped with 6:36 left in the game and North Brunswick leading 51-40.

According to the reporter's account, a North Brunswick fan threw something on the court and a Whiteville player almost went into the stands.

Whiteville fans became irate at that point. Shortly after that, the reporter said North Brunswick coach Bryan Hayes went to the microphone and announced that everyone needed to calm down so the game could be finished or the gym would be cleared.

When the situation did not improve, deputies asked fans to leave. Whiteville fans left first, followed by the North Brunswick fans.

When play resumed, North Brunswick was awarded a one-and-one free throw while Whiteville got to shoot a technical foul. The final minutes were played without further incident, and no spectators.

Rick Strunk, associate commissioner of the N.C. High School Athletic Associate Association, said anytime a gym is cleared during a game it is an unusual situation, but until further information is made available on what happened there is no way to predict if any penalties will be assessed to one or both schools or any of the individuals involved.
