South View girls build on strong start, beat Terry Sanford 63-49

HOPE MILLS - Coach Brent Barker complimented his South View Tigers' first-half play in the team's 63-49 win over Terry Sanford.

"I thought we played fantastic help defense in the first half," Barker said.

The Tigers (9-1, 2-0 Mid-South 4-A) held the Bulldogs (5-2, 0-2) to 17 points in the half, building a 22-point lead that would help them stave off a late push by Terry Sanford in the first half.

Sophomore standout Chinyere Bell led the Tigers with 17 points. She grabbed 12 rebounds and had four steals.

"We played good defense, and that's a trust thing," Bell said. "We tried to help get on each other's man, and you have to trust that people will get back."

The Tigers were lively on defense, forcing turnovers and disrupting the Bulldogs' offense. At times, South View's defensive efforts were overzealous, resulting in a barrage of fouls whistled against the Tigers.

The Bulldogs went to the line 32 times, but unfortunately for Terry Sanford, the team made 13 free throws - worse than 41 percent.

Gerri Williams, who has served as Bulldogs' head coach since Gil Bowman stepped down Dec. 3, said her team's performance lacked energy through the first three quarters.

"There were times when my girls were standing at halfcourt, watching what was going on," Williams said.

The coach said her team's effort improved in the final quarter when her team outscored South View 23-14.

Shaniqua Bowman contributed seven points in the final period, part of a game-high 19 scored by the senior, but the effort wasn't enough to overcome South View's lead.
