South View boys win defensive battle over Terry Sanford, 47-38 (OT)
HOPE MILLS - South View coach Wendell Wise had given his players notice that Tuesday's game against Terry Sanford in the Tigers' Miller Gym might seem familiar.
"I told them this was probably going to be the closest game we saw to Pine Forest, playing against a hard-nosed defense," the coach said.
The Tigers (9-1, 1-1), couldn't pull off the win at Pine Forest on Friday, but they bettered the Bulldogs in overtime Tuesday with a 47-38 win.
Ria'n Holland scored a game-high 18 points in the contest and was the only player in double digits.
The senior guard said Tigers' success was the result of strong defense of their own and a varied offensive attack.
The Tigers led 20-16 at halftime, and that tender lead was swallowed whole when the Bulldogs' defense, called "smothering" by Wise, held South View to two points in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs (4-3, 1-1) held a 24-22 lead at the end of the third.
Both teams had opportunities to hold the ball for a final shot with the score tied as the final quarter wound down, but turnovers on both sides forced overtime with the score at 33-all.
The Tigers controlled the momentum in the extra period, spurred on by an early 3-pointer from Ross Jewell.
"Ross' 3 got everybody up," Holland said.
Ross' 3-pointer ignited a 7-0 run by the Tigers to start overtime.
The run was a rare stretch allowed by Terry Sanford, which boasts one of the most dominant defenses in Cumberland County.
The Bulldogs are the only team to hold opponents to an average of less than 50 points per game.
"That's the trademark of our program," coach Bill Boyette said. "We teach that we can have nights like tonight offensively and still compete."
No Bulldog scored double digits. Jahi Hughes and Chiagozie Udoh each scored nine.
Terry Sanford never recovered from the Tigers' spurt, a trend that Boyette said will have to end for the Bulldogs to have success.
"We've lost three games, and all of them have been in the final quarter," Boyette said. "We've got to get tougher mentally at crunch time."
