Fayetteville native Connell Maynor, the head coach at Winston-Salem State University, has been named a regional coach of the year by the American Football Coaches Association.
The AFCA recognizes five regional coach of the year winners in each of the Association's five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The winners are selected by active members of the Association who vote in their respective regions and divisions.
The regional winners will be recognized at the AFCA Coach of the Year dinner Jan. 8 in Nashville, Tenn.
Maynor, an E.E. Smith High graduate, is 34-3 in three seasons at Winston-Salem State. He has led the Rams to back-to-back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships.
Winston-Salem State is 13-0 following Saturday's win over Indiana (Pa.) in the NCAA Div. II playoffs. It will host West Texas A&M (12-2) Saturday in the national semifinals, with the game set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
Regional winners in the Football Bowl Subdivision are: Charlie Strong, Louisville; Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M; Brian Kelly, Notre Dame; Bill Snyder, Kansas State; and Mike Riley, Oregon State.
