New Bern tops Porter Ridge 39-38 for state 4-A title

 

CHAPEL HILL - Jac Watkins' 2-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds left gave New Bern a 39-38 victory over Indian Trail Porter Ridge on Friday night in the Class 4-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Watkins finished with 62 yards rushing and four touchdowns while Josh Taylor added 146 yards and a score to help New Bern (15-0) cap its unbeaten season.

Jerrick Robbins rushed for 174 yards and a touchdown and teammate Chris Duffy added 130 yards rushing and three scores for Porter Ridge (13-2).

Matt Wogan kicked a 26-yard field goal with 6:12 to play to put Porter Ridge up 38-33. Taylor and Watkins then led New Bern 80 yards in 15 plays, converting two third downs and a fourth down before Watkins' short game-winner in the final minute.

Zahair Cherry sealed it by intercepting Isaiah Hicklin's final pass at the Porter Ridge 42 in the closing seconds.
