Ex-Panther Minter reportedly new Campbell football coach

Former Carolina Panthers safety Mike Minter is expected to be named head football coach at Campbell University on Tuesday, the Charlotte Observer reported today.

Minter, 38, is the special teams coach at Liberty University. He previously was an assistant coach at Johnson C. Smith University and head coach at First Assembly Christian in Concord.

Minter will replace Dale Steele, who was hired in 2006 to lead the rebirth of a football program that had been dormant since 1950. Steele had a 16-39 record in five full seasons. The Camels were 6-5 overall in 2011, but slipped to 1-10 this season.

Minter played for the Panthers from 1997-2006. He retired from the Carolina Panthers with team records for game starts (141) and consecutive starts (94), as well as for fumble recoveries and interceptions resulting in touchdowns.

His first game as Campbell's coach will be as the inaugural opponent for Charlotte.
