Lumberton edges South View, 27-26
In a game highlighted by amazing feats of offense, Lumberton's Demetri Sheridan ended it with one great defensive play.
Sheridan sacked South View quarterback Troy Cain on fourth down with 1:05 to play, preserving a 27-26 win Friday night.
The sack ended a game that featured three touchdowns of over 60 yards and a combined 731 yards of offense.
"It was tough, but we made the clutch plays down the stretch to win," Sheridan said.
Running back Daniel Robinson was the catalyst of the Pirate offense, running for 167 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown.
"It was hard playing both running back and linebacker tonight, but I was able to stick it out and we were able to pull this win out," Robinson said.
Lumberton (2-1) started and finished the first half strong. On the Pirates' first play from scrimmage, Frank Dickerson raced to the end zone from 72 yards out.
Then with 50 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Devin Terry picked up a South View fumble in the end zone to give Lumberton a 20-6 lead at intermission.
South View (0-3) came back to tie the score on a 95-yard pass from Troy Cain to Sergio Britton late in the third quarter and a 7-yard run by Cain with 10:18 left in the fourth.
Three plays later, Lumberton answered with a 61-yard touchdown pass from Jezreelite Deese to Joshua Sheridan. It was the Pirates' only completetion of the game.
"We worked on passing all week but because of the heat tonight the gameplan was to keep the ball on the ground," Lumberton coach Mike Brill said. "When South View tied it up, I made the call for a pass and the team executed it to perfection."
The Tigers weren't done, scoring on a nine-play, 65-yard drive on their ensuing possession. Deshawn Ford's 1-yard run cut the Lumberton lead to 27-26 with 5:11 to play, but Kevan Fox's second missed extra point prevented South View from getting any closer.
"The kids didn't quit," Ledford said. "They fought back and tied it up but we made mistakes toward the end. As time goes on, those errors will be fixed."
Both teams had problems throughout the contest holding onto the ball, with South View having five fumbles and lost three.
Lumberton wound up losing four of its six fumbles, including one by Robinson with 1:28 to go giving South View a final chance.
The Tigers, however, failed to convert with Cain throwing two incompletions and taking two sacks on the final drive, including Sheridan's hit on fourth down.
"I have to give it to these kids," Brill said. "They definitely showed their heart tonight through all adversity."
