Two Robeson County teens killed in single-car crash near Fairmont Monday
FAIRMONT - Two recent Fairmont High School graduates and football players were killed Monday in a single-vehicle crash on N.C. 41 about a mile south of Fairmont, the Highway Patrol said.
Tyreke Addison, 18, of 1102 E. 8th St. in Lumberton, and Nokolma Dakota Hunt, 18, of 1716 N.C. 904 in Fairmont, died in the wreck that happened about 8:30 p.m., according to a report filed by Trooper D.E. Raynor.
Both were passengers in a 1994 Ford Thunderbird driven by DyMaggio Alexander Gilchrist, 18, of Lake View , S.C., another former Fairmont High School graduate and football player, the report said.
Two other passengers in the car were injured, Raynor's report said. They were identified as Devont'e Shaquan Govan, 17, of the 100 block of Leroy Road in Marietta , and Darius McCallum, 18, of the 6100 block of Wiregrass Road in Orrum.
The Thunderbird was traveling east on N.C. 41 when it ran off the right side of the road, the report said.
As the car traveled off the road, it began to spin around and crashed into a tree with the left back side of the vehicle taking the impact, the report said.
Addison was in the back seat, on the left side, where the impact happened, the report said.
Addison, a wide receiver and defensive back, earned All-Three Rivers 2-A/1-A Conference honors last season while helping Fairmont win the Golden Tornadoes to the league football championship.
Hunt was riding in the center of the back seat and McCallum was sitting on the right side of the back seat, the report said. Hunt was a running back and linebacker for the football team last season.
None of them wore seat belts, the report said.
Gilchrist and Govan, who rode in the front passenger seat, both had seat belts on, the report said.
Gilchrist was an all-conference running back for Fairmont, who has signed to play next fall at Malone University in Canton, Ohio.
Neither alcohol nor speed were factors, the report said. The car was traveling 55 mph, which is the speed limit.
It was not raining at the time, but the pavement was wet, the report said.
Gilchrist and Govan were taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Raynor said.
A hospital spokeswoman said this morning that both are in good condition.
McCallum, who will be a senior on the Fairmont football team this fall, was taken to Duke University Hospital, but his condition wasn't immediately available.
Charges are pending, a Highway Patrol spokesman said.
