Cape Fear Christian wins NCISAA 1-A state softball title

NASHVILLE - Cape Fear Christian Academy continued its dominance of the 1-A classification in softball in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament Saturday.

The Eagles of Erwin won their third state title in the last four years, beating Hobgood 8-6 in the final game.

Cape Fear went 3-0 en route to the title. The Eagles finished 20-2 while Hobgood was 22-5.

Callie Ferrell and Kristin Adams led the win over Hobgood. Ferrell had a triple and drove in three runs while Adams had a double, two singles and also drove in three. Also with RBIs were Hannah Lucas and Morgan Prince. Elizabeth Gibson was the winning pitcher.

Callie Ferrell, Ashtin Ferrell and Katyln Williams were named to the 1-A All-State team.

The title was Cape Fear's fourth in the last seven years. In the years they didn't win the championship they placed second.

Warriors lose

CHARLOTTE - Arendell Parrott came out of the loser's bracket to win two games and spoil Fayetteville Christian's bid for the 2-A N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A softball title.

Parrott beat Fayetteville Christian 5-2 in the first game and clinched the title with a 5-1 win in the second game.

Fayetteville pitcher Emily Hester was the leading hitter for the Warriors, going 3-for-7 with a double.

Fayetteville coach Tommy Hester said Parrott is one of the state's top-ranked teams, public or private, and was the defending 2-A champion.

"What it boils down to is they were just a better team than us today,'' he said.

Two Fayetteville players, Hester and shortstop Victoria Vines, were chosen to the private schools 2-A All-State team.
