Nathan Faulk is leaving South View to become the head boys' basketball coach at Laney High School in Wilmington.
David Culbreth, South View athletic director, said Faulk interviewed for the position at Laney last week, and informed South View officials Tuesday he had been offered the job. Faulk's hiring is subject to the final approval of the New Hanover County Board of Education.
Faulk spent four years as an assistant coach at Laney under former coach Fred Lynch.
"It was one of those jobs I always looked at one day, going back and taking over,'' Faulk said.
He said leaving South View was a tough decision. "We've got that program in a very good state,'' he said. "We had a really good team coming back.''
In four years at South View Faulk was 39-64. He had his best record at the school last season, going 14-14 and earning a state 4-A playoff berth.
Culbreth is uncertain when South View will begin the process to search for Faulk's replacement.
"We want to begin as quickly as possible, but with him not being approved it puts us in kind of a unique position,'' Culbreth said. "We'll form a committee, post it and begin looking as soon as we get the go-ahead.''
Culbreth said it will be important to get a new coach in place in time for him to organize an off-season workout program for the Tiger basketball team.
"A lot of people think basketball doesn't start until next year,'' Culbreth said. "But with summer league stuff and State Games, we promised our kids we'd do our best to find somebody as quickly as we could.''
