Baseball
The Town of Hope Mills Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for Dixie Boys' Baseball, ages 13-14 until April 20. The season will start May 20. The cost is $30, and all Cumberland County residents can register. For more information, call 426-4108.
The Fayetteville YMCA is accepting registration for the new All-American Baseball League for ages 10-12. Private schools, churches and public schools, as well as area travel teams can register as a team. The cost per player is $75. The league is geared to enhance young baseball players looking to elevate their game. There are no restrictions on where you live to play in this league. Birth certificates will not be required. The YMCA provides uniforms, practice fields and insurance coverage for teams. County Recreation teams are welcome to register. The YMCA will work around schedules with the County Recreation League. The season will run from late April through mid-June. Practice and games will be flexible to accommodate coaches and players. For more information, parents and coaches can call 910-476-2141.
Basketball
Freedom Courts Sportsplex (3126 Gillespie St.) will host The North Carolina Basketball Showcase on April 26-28. The showcase offers teams a chance to perform in front of college coaches. Play is open to boys' 14U, 15U, 16U, 17U and Open Divisions. Registration fee of $425 per team must be paid by April 22. Mixtapes and highlight videos will be available. UAA Basketball is looking for Middle School girls' basketball players. UAA is not an AAU team. UAA is a travel team that works out and drills three nights a week at the John D. Fuller Sr. RAC and will go to a few tournaments during the summer. There is no cost to participate but members are selected by invitation only. Call Coach Dupree at 910-977-2954 for more information.
Former Duke University and E.E. Smith High School player Robert Brickey is offering intensive basketball skills training weekly at Freedom Courts on Gillespie Street. Brickey will conduct beginner lessons for players ages 7-12 starting on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. Intermediate lessons for players ages 9-14 will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. The cost is $95 for six sessions. Softball
The Town of Hope Mills Parks and Recreation Department is looking for 11- and 12-year-old girls, born in 2000 or 2001, for Dixie Youth Softball. All Cumberland County residents can register. Tennis
Lumberton High School Pirate tennis camps for ages 7-17 will be held July 8-11 and July 15-18 from 9 a.m. until noon, Monday-Thursday. Cost: is $100 per week (includes camp T-shirt). The Chris McLean Memorial Scotland County Spring Tennis Open will be held May 18-19 at the Scotland County Tennis Center in Laurinburg. The following brackets will be played: Men's Open, 4.0 and 3.5 Singles and Doubles; and Women's 4.0 and 3.5 Singles and Doubles; Mixed Doubles, Boys' and Girls' 18, 16, 14, 12 and 10-and-under Singles. Entry fees are $15 for adult singles, $25 per team for doubles and $10 for 18-and-under. Up to two brackets can be entered, and youth can participate in adult events. Entry fees include: match play, T-shirt, daily refreshments, lunch on Saturday and awards. All proceeds will go towards the development of youth tennis and the promotion of tennis in Scotland County.
Volleyball
The Fayetteville Homeschool Crusaders are hosting two volleyball camps. A two-day camp for beginners will be held May 16-17 from 5-8 p.m. This camp is open to ages 10and up and the cost is $40. Coach Leo Sayles from Gardner-Webb will host a camp for intermediate/advanced players, rising 7th graders and above on June 17-19 from 9 a.m. -4 p.m. each day. Cost for this camp is $160.
