HOPE MILLS - Next year, if Durham Hillside quarterback Vad Lee has games like the one he had Friday night, the ACC will be in great shape.
Lee threw for 193 yards, ran for 53 and had three touchdowns as the Hornets stung South View 53-13. The quarterback, who is headed to Georgia Tech, helped Hillsided (3-0) run out to a 33-0 halftime advantage and start the game with 46 unanswered points. Lee threw two touchdowns and ran for a third during the first 20 minutes.
South View (1-2) fell victim to a dynamic offense and costly penalties on three Hornet touchdown drives. Overall the Tigers were outgained on the ground 242-96 and 441-285 overall.
"We have to do a better job of blocking and tackling," South View coach Randy Ledford stated. "That's what football is all about and if you can't do that, then you're in trouble. (Hillside) did a better job" (of both).
Hillside scored on a fumble return in the first minute after halftime, and then on a beautiful double reverse with Shawn Malloy getting into the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown. South View got on the board with Dale Urquhart throwing a beautiful strike to Temorrie McNeil with 3:58 left in the third after the game was already out of reach.
South View's Justin Fredrick had a 3-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 46-13, but Hillside's Myer Krah took the ensuing kickoff 77 yards to close out the scoring.
Urquhart finished 9 of 19 passing for 189 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Temorrie McNeil led all recievers with 5 catches for 149 yards. On the Hornets' side, Jamal Williams had a game-high 96 yards on the ground.
