Earl's picks: Luckily, that other Earl shouldn't cause us any trouble
Earl Vaughan Jr.
The Outer Banks have hurt my dad's feelings.
He and I share the same first name, and as he was watching news accounts of the approach of Hurricane Earl, he saw a sign an Outer Banks resident had prepared that read, "Earl, you are not welcome here."
I told Dad not to fret, because we hold a mutual disdain for the Outer Banks. Years ago, it was the scene of the worst vacation our family ever took.
We had just crossed over on the ferry in the early evening, ultimately en route to Virginia, when we tried to check into a motel. The motel took Visa and all my dad had was MasterCard.
He said we'd drive on and find another place.
We did, about 3 a.m., in Suffolk, Va.
We've not been to the Outer Banks since.
Gladly, it appears our hurricane namesake will only brush the Banks this weekend, and even better won't disturb tonight's football games.
So let's all be thankful for that bit of good news.
The record: 37-12
A decent second week of 20-5 pushed the total for this year to 37-12, a 75.5 percentage.
Let's see if we can maintain the pace going into week three tonight.
Hoke County at Seventy-First - Seventy-First didn't fare too well in its first game with a Southeastern Conference team this season. I think things will be different tonight ...Seventy-First 28, Hoke County 14.
Cape Fear at Douglas Byrd - Could be a long night for Cape Fear with Chris Kelly out of the lineup ...Douglas Byrd 27, Cape Fear 12.
Westover at E.E. Smith - I'm not picking in a winner in battle of the bands in this one, but no doubt who's winning the football game and staying unbeaten ...E.E. Smith 29, Westover 8.
Pine Forest at Smithfield-Selma - This could Pine Forest's best chance to end its early frustration ...Pine Forest 21, Smithfield-Selma 18.
Durham Hillside at South View - If the Tigers hold Hillside under 100 points, count this one as a moral victory ...Durham Hillside 30, South View 12.
Wilmington Hoggard at Jack Britt - I don't think the Vikings will stand in the way of Britt coach Richard Bailey getting is 100th career win ...Jack Britt 30, Wilmington Hoggard 7.
Terry Sanford at Gray's Creek - Gray's Creek regroups from a disappointing loss to South View ...Gray's Creek 21, Terry Sanford 20.
