Terry Sanford cashes in on Westover's mistakes

Terry Sanford used Westover mistakes and a throwback offense for a 45-0 victory over the host Wolverines on Friday night.

Westover lost five fumbles and experienced some problems with its punting game to give the Bulldogs a surplus of prime field position opportunities.

Terry Sanford moved forward from the legal and eligibility issues that finished its 2009 season. The Bulldogs did so without that early 20th century innovation, the forward pass. Operating exclusively on the ground, Terry Sanford accumulated 263 yards on 39 snaps.

Anthony Hobbs didn't make the Terry Sanford faithful forget about A.J. Clanton but he did help ease the memory of Clanton's transfer to Garner. Hobbs ran for 114 yards with two touchdowns on 13 carries.

"I got to come in and take over the spot," Hobbs said. "Like Coach (Wayne Inman) said, 'We've got to overcome adversity' - and that's what I came here to do."

Bulldogs quarterback Dante McDonald rolled right and went down the sideline for a 49-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring with 7:31 left in the first half.

"I saw daylight and took it," McDonald said. "I ran as fast as I could. It was fun. I got some jump - some momentum for my team."

Avery Clark had eight tackles in the shutout. Bulldogs linebacker Nick Broussard had six stops before he was sent to the sideline early in the third period following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Inman said he would have to check with the officials' report to the booking agent to determine if Broussard was disqualified or ejected. An ejection results in suspension for the ensuing game.

Terry Sanford had plenty of stars. Justin Wheeler ran for 71 yards on 12 carries with a pair of 5-yard scores. McDonald closed the third quarter with a 1-yard keeper for a touchdown. Mike Rose came off the bench to scamper 24 yards for a Bulldog TD.
