Prep notes: Football jamboree moving to FSU

After being held at Pine Forest High School since it was created, the Cumberland County Schools Football Jamboree is moving to a new location next month.

Fayetteville State will be the site of this year's jamboree, which is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 12.

The event's main sponsors will be Clark's Sporting Goods and The Trophy House.

There have been some changes in the format, the biggest one involving the time for each scrimmage. It has been expanded to an hour. To allow sufficient time for all of the scrimmages, the time schedule has been advanced from previous years.

Tickets to the jamboree are $5. Gates will open at 3 p.m. As with most major athletic events involving Cumberland County Schools, metal detectors will be used at the stadium.

A cheerleading showcase will begin at 3:30 p.m. and continue until 4:30 p.m.

Scrimmaging will begin at 5 p.m. with four teams on the field at one time, one pair playing on either side of the 50-yard-line and advancing to the opposite goal post.

Here is the schedule of scrimmages:

5 p.m. - E.E. Smith vs. Hoke County, Goldsboro vs. East Columbus

6 p.m. - West Bladen vs. Westover, Pinecrest vs. Cape Fear

7 p.m. - Clinton vs. Goldsboro, Hoke County vs. Pine Forest

8 p.m. - South View vs. Western Harnett, Terry Sanford vs. Overhills

9 p.m. - Jack Britt vs. Gray's Creek, Douglas Byrd vs. Seventy-First.

For further information on the scrimmage, contact Leon Mack, student activities director for Cumberland County Schools, at 678-2444 during regular school hours.

David Culbreth, athletic director at South View, is in charge of this year's jamboree and can be reached at 425-8181, also during normal school hours.

The meeting for the Southeastern Volleyball Officials Association will be held Thursday at Pine Forest High School.

Dinner is from 4:45 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. and the meeting begins at 6 p.m.

For further information, contact Bill Henderson at (910) 964-0056.

Two important meetings are coming up soon for local high school football officials.

The Southeastern Football Officials Association will hold a meeting for all current officials and anyone interested in getting into football officiating on Sunday, July 25, at South View High School. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m.

On Monday, Aug. 2, Mark Dreibelbis of the N.C. High School Athletic Association will head a clinic discussing changes in high school football rules for the upcoming season.

This clinic is mandatory for all officials, as well as for all high school football coaches who don't attend a similar clinic scheduled in Greensboro next week.

Dreibelbis will make his presentation at 6:30 p.m. at South View High School.

We'll have a preview of next week's East-West All-Star games in Greensboro in Sunday's newspaper. It will include information on the games themselves and brief capsules on Cape Fear region players and coaches who have been selected to take part in the games.
