Hensley leads locals at nationals
Pinecrest freshman Hannah Hensley led a group of Cape Fear region athletes who competed at the New Balance Track and Field Nationals this past weekend.
Hensley placed first in the emerging elite long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 10.25 inches. She also finished 17th in the high jump (5-2.5) and 22nd in the 200-meter emerging elite (25.81 seconds).
Jack Britt graduate Sanura Eley O'Reilly finished fourth in the girls' 400 (54.19), and Douglas Byrd rising senior Eric Winfrey was fifth in the boys' 400 (53.14). Fayetteville Academy's Aminah Ghaffar was eighth in the 400 freshman girls' in 1:00.91. In the boys' 400 emerging elite, Pine Forest's Marvin Clark was fifth (49.26) and E.E. Smith's Lucas Latney was sixth (49.32). Pinecrest's Lexie Schustrom was 12th in the girls' 1,500 emerging elite (4:48.04) and 13th in the mile (5:10.20). South View's Michael Moore was 20th in the 110 hurdles (14.53).
In the field, Lumberton's Carthenia Brown finished 13th in girls' shot put emerging elite (36-3). Harnett Central's Aerial Chatman took sixth in long jump emerging elite (22-1), and Western Harnett's Joseph Matthews was seventh in the boys' emerging elite high jump (6-.5).
