She has coached middle school volleyball at West Hoke and East Hoke from 2006-2009. She won conference titles at both schools.

In a prepared statement, Vandevender called Thomas a "high character young lady," adding that the school's volleyball program would improve and he looked forward to working with her for years to come.

A number of Cape Fear region players have been selected to take part in this year's North Carolina State Games softball competition.

Five players were picked to the East team that will take on a West squad.

The five include Jack Britt's Caitlin Sandy, Scotland's Brittany Gibson, Lee County's Ashley Poulin and Harnett Central's Jessi Lane and Tori Williford. Scotland's Patrick Williams is an assistant coach for the team.

Most of the region players picked for the game were named to the Region 4 team. The East and West All-Star teams will play a best-of-three series on Thursday, June 24, at UNC-Charlotte. Games will be at 2, 4 and 6 p.m.

The various region all-star teams, a total of eight, will be divided into two four-team brackets and compete in pool play on June 21-22. Games will be at UNC-Charlotte and Huntersville's Hopewell High School.
