Cape Fear earns share of softball crown
A staff report
HOPE MILLS - Cape Fear held off a late South View rally to escape with a 4-3 win over the Tigers in the Mid-South Conference regular-season softball finale for both teams Thursday.
The win allowed Cape Fear to tie Jack Britt for the regular season championship in the conference.
Following the game, Britt won a coin flip for the top seed and home field advantage in next week's Mid-South Conference tournament. The tournament will determine which of the two teams gets the No. 1 berth in the state 4-A playoffs, based on which team advances furthest next week.
"South View always plays us tough here at South View,'' said Cape Fear co-coach Jeff McPhail. "To come out of here with a win and be co-champs feels good.''
McPhail said the Colts need to improve on hitting and defense. "Defense is going to win it, so we've got to work on defense the next couple of days,'' he said.
Play in the conference tournament begins Monday. Britt will have a first-round bye. The first-round games will be played at the home fields of the top-seeded teams.
