E.E. Smith girls put on show for famous alum

On Jan. 7, E.E. Smith used a great defense to beat Jack Britt on the road 58-33. Friday night, with a celebrity in the crowd, the Golden Bulls delivered another tremendous performance.

With Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry, a graduate of E.E. Smith, looking on, the Golden Bulls defeated the Buccaneers 68-28. E.E. Smith (16-1, 9-0 Mid-South Conference) put on a defensive clinic and fast break show, delighting perhaps the school's most famous graduate.

"This is the first time I've been able to see a basketball game since my freshman year of college," Curry said. "The girls put on a nice show and dominated."

The Golden Bulls took a 24-3 lead after one quarter and a 44-7 advantage at halftime by holding the Buccanners to 24 percent shooting for the game, including 10 percent in the first half. E.E. Smith also forced 40 turnovers, with 14 in the first quarter alone. Many of those turnovers turned into easy transitional buckets or trips to the free throw line, as the Golden Bulls shot 46 percent from the field and made 10 of 15 free throws.

"Our coach, (Dee Hardy), was just preaching defense the entire time," Avae' Hardy said.

Jack Britt (13-8, 4-5) fell to 0-3 this week after losing 51-42 to Pine Forest on Tuesday and 62-35 to South View one day later. The Buccaneers were never in this game, hitting only two field goals in the first half, the first coming with 6:23 remaining in the opening quarter and the second with 3:14 left before halftime.

"Coming into this game, we knew our opponent was an aggressive team that played great defense," Jack Britt coach Natalie McArthur said. "When (E.E. Smith's) transition game is going as well, it's going to be tough (to beat them)."

E.E. Smith's Jovannah Graham was the only double-digit scorer with 18 points. Sloane Shank had six points to lead Jack Britt. Caitlin Sandy, who came into the game averaging more than 14 points a game, scored five on 2 of 10 shooting.
