Bulldogs to recognize 1965, 1966 title teams
Terry Sanford High School is planning to recognize members of the 1965 and 1966 state 4-A championship team from old Fayetteville High School at a special ceremony Friday, Feb. 12.
The Bulldogs will close the regular season that night with a home game against Jack Britt, and are inviting all members of the 1965 and 1966 teams to attend the game to be recognized.
For further information, contact Terry Sanford athletic director Lee Spruill at 484-1151 during school hours.
Barring weather complications this weekend, swimmers from Cumberland County will head north of Chapel Hill to Hillsborough to compete in the 4-A Central Regional swim meet Saturday.
The meet will be held at the Triangle Sports Plex in Hillsborough. The coaches' meeting is at 11:05 a.m. and competition begins immediately after that.
Cumberland County has some of the lowest qualifying times it's ever had for the regional swimming competition.
Terry Sanford's Nicole Tronolone has the third best time in the 500-yard free style. In the 200-yard freestyle, Tronolone has the fifth-best time.
Dustin Dyer of Terry Sanford is No. 4 in the boys' 500-yard freestyle. He is also No. 6 in the boys' 200-yard individual medley.
The best swimmers will advance from the regionals to the state 4-A meet, which is scheduled Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
Competition will begin at 2:15 p.m. and continue until completion.
The Cape Fear Valley 3-A Conference may or may not have a wrestling tournament this weekend. If it does, it's almost certain all of the conference teams won't be able to participate.
Due to postponements of matches caused by this week's snow, some schools aren't through with their regular-season schedule. In addition, Lee County Schools will be in session Saturday to try and make up one of the days they missed this week. Conference member Southern Lee is one of those schools, and will not be able to take part in a Saturday tournament.
It's not clear at this point if conference officials will cancel the event, or try to hold some kind of abbreviated tournament Saturday. A final decision will be made Thursday.
Jack Britt High School will host Saturday's Mid-South 4-A Conference regular-season wrestling tournament after winning the conference regular season title.
Coaches were scheduled to meet this evening to make plans for the time schedule for the tournament and to seed each of the brackets. The full schedule will be announced later this week.
There is snow in the forecast for this weekend, and if the tournament has to be called off because of inclement weather, like the Cape Fear Valley 3-A tournament it will not be rescheduled.
